2013 Race Report - Studland Stampede, Sunday 13th Oct 2013
The 2013 Stampede runners set off under greyer skies than last year but delivered impressive results. Ground conditions were ideal due to the hot summer having dried out the course, making the heathland firmer under foot. The absence of a strong head wind meant that the final sandy miles were a fraction kinder, although grueling nonetheless.
Completing his third Stampede, Lee Piercy (competing for Performance Cycles) was the first man to cross the finish line, in 44:42, nearly 2 ½ minutes off his last Stampede. Four times Stampeder, Clive Kennedy-Burn was the second man to cross the line, in 46:47, improving his PB by a staggering 5 minutes. There must have been quite a battle out on the course with Bournemouth AC’s Karl Welch finishing in third position, in 46:51, just 4 seconds behind Clive.
Georgie Roberts worked hard to stride out the final sandy miles to claim her place as first female, in 56:56, with Littledown Harriers’ Izzy Collins just 20 seconds behind her, in 57:10. In third place was Zoom Tri Club’s Helena Chessher, running her second Stampede and improving on last year’s time by nearly 1-½ minutes.
Completing its 9th year, the organisers of the Studland Stampede were delighted to see so many runners returning each year to wrestle with personal bests, dish out some friendly rivalry and contribute to the camaraderie and lively atmosphere. The Stampede team was also very pleased with the number of new runners that successfully completed their first Stampede this year.
Runners were fast to express their thanks on the Stampede Facebook pages, to the fantastic volunteer marshals that supported them and made the event run smoothly; Purbeck Runners being responsible for providing half of this brilliant, happy, friendly bunch. The Goodie Bags were a big hit too, with the National Trust, LUSH cosmetics, Dorset Flapjack and Coltswold Outdooors all contributing. The final year interns from Anglo European College of Chiropractic also joined the Stampede for their second year, to massage away our runners aches and pains.
The 2014 Stampede date has been set for Sunday 12 th October. Entries now open for re-entrants only. Entry will open to everyone in February 2014.
